In an effort to maximize their performance skills, athletes of all ages and at all levels have sought help from a variety of sources – some legal and some incredibly dangerous and not so legal. The one outstanding and readily available tool is finally getting some well-deserved attention: sleep. However, there appears to be major differences of opinion on how to achieve this goal. Some groups have contracted with sleep specialists to help their players gain much needed rest, while other clubs simply issue their players sleeping pills. Stanford University’s Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine has conducted research examining the sleep-sport performance connection and has been able to show the effects of extended sleep on athletic performance in several different sports.
