Sports psychology is a fairly young area of psychotherapy, but is proving to be more and more worthy of study. While physical training in regard to sports is very important, the mental aspect of it has been shown to be equally involved with success. While measuring the importance of mental training in sports has proven to be tricky, researchers have discovered that common qualities of successful athletes include a positive attitude, strong self motivation, attainable goals, strong interpersonal communication, and positive self-talk. Professional sports teams are even starting to staff mental trainers to help their teams become more successful, on and off the field.
