Sports psychologists give teams an edge in many ways. They work closely with players and team staff, counseling them on things like team performance, and issues with individual players. They help each player to obtain their own unique version of optimal performance by going over pre-game mental routines, energy management techniques, mental imagery skills, and self-confidence. Sports psychologists also aid the transition from high school to collegiate level sports, and from the college level to the professional level. Other issues that sport psychologists discuss include effective goal setting, relaxation training, mental rehearsal and imagery, and coming up with individualized mental preparation routines.
