Overwork/Underwork—Two Sides of Male Depression

Two of the ways men can express feeling worthless due to depression are by overworking themselves, or by simply not working at all. Overwork happens when a man gives all of his attention to his job to try to ignore the belief that he is unlovable. The mentality of “at least I’m useful this way.” Underwork is expressed when a man avoids networking and job hunting because he feels like he is somehow undeserving of having friends or being successful. In either of these cases, a more balanced relationship with working can be achieved by bolstering the low self-esteem that comes with depression.
