We all face challenges in our every day lives that can become overwhelming and sometimes even develop into consistent patterns. Individual psychotherapy provides an opportunity to examine your situation and create change in a lasting and meaningful way so that you can achieve peak living. Dr. Baker’s primary areas of expertise for individual therapy are:
- Depression & mood disorders
- Problems with friendships and/or romantic relationships
- Issues of divorce
- Grief & loss
- Life transitions
- Workplace conflicts
Dr. Baker’s approach is integrative. He has a firm belief that no one therapeutic approach fits everyone who needs help. Instead, there are important aspects of a number of approaches that can be combined to suit the unique needs of every client. Dr. Baker draws from several different theoretical perspectives including Self Psychology, Intersubjective Theory, Systems Theory, Cognitive-Behavioral Theory, and Existential/Humanistic Theories.
Historically, research in psychology has focused on understanding deficits in human psychological functioning. More recently, the positive psychology movement has helped shift the focus toward understanding our natural strengths and those factors that help us achieve the best things in life (e.g. happiness, satisfaction, flow). These ideas help define what it means to achieve peak living – the primary goal of Dr. Baker’s work with his clients. – and are regular presences in the work that he does with his clients.
