“Shoulds” are things that you have come to expect as a baseline, normal level of the way things “should” be, such as expectations of beauty, wealth, or success that you put on yourself or allow others to put on you. A simple, yet highly therapeutic method of reducing stress in your life is to come up with a list of “shoulds” that you feel are unrealistic. Realizing which of the “shoulds” in your life are simply unobtainable will help you immensely, because at that point you can decide to stop feeling inadequate and be happy again.
