According to what we know about happiness, about half of it comes from our genes. People are genetically predisposed to a happiness “set point.” Only 10 percent of our happiness comes from our life circumstances, such as personal belongings and marital status. The other 40 percent of our happiness is in our control. Things we can do to improve our sense of well-being include getting some exercise, spending time doing what we love to do, keeping a positive attitude, associating with supportive people, setting personal goals, being thankful for what we have instead of coveting things we don’t, and performing random acts of kindness.
